Simon Horrocks reached out to SF-Fandom in late 2011, asking us to help spread the word about his independent science fiction thriller “Third Contact”. He allowed us to publish “Third Contact” production stills in our forums and we gave you a sneak peak at “Third Contact” in December 2011.

Since then Simon went on to promote the movie at some independent film festivals but a few weeks ago he reached out to me again with some interesting news. Beginning May 15, 2013 and running through July 10, 2013 Simon is using Kickstarter to raise money for a general distribution of the movie. That is, he wants you to be able to watch it in your own home town on a big theater screen (or maybe a small one — I am sure this would run in indy film houses). Correction: Simon is raising money to show the movie on London’s largest IMAX screen.

“Can you help with a review of the movie?” Simon asked me. Frankly, my movie reviews come few and far between. But I wanted to help Simon so I let other members of the Xenite.Org network know about the project. Thankfully my friends over at Communizine were able to round up some film buffs to review the movie.

You can now read my good friend (and business partner) Randy Ray’s review of “Third Contact” on Good Movies Blog as well as writer Tex Lawton’s review of “Third Contact” on the Zanyish blog (tip: look for the word “zany” in Lawton’s article) and writer Will Roby’s review of “Third Contact” over on Top Ten Topia.

If you saw the movie at a film festival last year, Simon told me he had re-edited the footage. I don’t know what specific changes were made. I’m a supporter of the project, though, as I have just pledged 32 British Pounds (about $49 US) to the Kickstarter campaign.

You have an opportunity to help an independent film-maker realize his dream. I think you should check it out. Maybe you’ll be able to take your friends to see the movie at a theater near you one day and you’ll be able to tell them, “I helped make this happen!” (UPDATE: Well, maybe general distribution is further down the road.)

Isn’t that really what SF Fandom is all about?

Thanks for reaching out to us, Simon. And good luck with your campaign!

UPDATE: Just received the following from Simon:

Actually the campaign is for general theatrical distribution, starting with a small release to a few independents in London.

The BFI IMAX screening is one of the kickstarter rewards which we are hoping will draw attention to the campaign and perhaps provide some headlines once we start getting in touch with the major press. It is a major focus of our campaign, as if we fill 450 seats, we will go well over our £15000 target. Its quite ambitious, but even 250 seats would go a very long way to securing our goal.
