Tolkien Fans to Take to the High Seas Starting in Late 2014

If you have ever been wondering what it would be like to sail on that white ship with Elrond — well, if you ask me I think it would have been crowded with all those High-falutin’ Elves and their horses (not to mention a bit stinky). So I can’t imagine I would have wanted to go on THAT ship — I might have waited for Sam’s voyage.

All that said, if you’re curious what it’s like to take a Tolkien fan convention to the sea, well, it looks like you have an opportunity to find out. I was contacted earlier this year by Ray Jelley of Trilo3y Voyages (yes, that is a “3” in place of the “g”). He has put together quite a lineup of Tolkien fans and scholars who plan to set sail on the first of (hopefully) many cruises that will host their own dedicated Tolkien fan events.

Cruise vacations to the Carribbean and other exotic locations are all the rage with tourists, and it only makes sense that sooner or later someone would think to take an entire fantasy fan convention on a cruise. Move aside, Spring Breakers, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

We have shared Ray Jelley’s press release in the forum but you can check out the site directly.

I have been invited to participate as a speaker and I would love to go but my schedule is up in the air right now. I have already made a commitment to Dragon*Con 2014 and planning that far ahead is rather challenging for me, as my independent consulting work often leaves me little time for long breaks.

All that said, I think fans will enjoy the voyages and I hope to be able to participate at some point even if I cannot make it for the maiden voyage.
