John Carter fans launch new campaign for sequel

If you’re not on Facebook or if you don’t know how to discover Facebook groups (Facebook pretty much sucks as a social media platform), you may not have heard about the latest fan campaign to help promote “John Carter” as a franchise.

We have posted a fair amount of news in our John Carter Forum and our Disney and Pixar Movies Forum. You almost certainly have heard that Disney Studio head Rich Ross has stepped down this week, leaving an opportunity for a new studio chief to come in and change directions for the company.

“John Carter” fans are trying to make sure they are heard before a replacement for Ross is named, lest someone who is even less supportive of the movie comes in.

To this end, they have launched Operation Woola, a letter writing campaign intended to build up support for a “John Carter” sequel within the Disney/PIXAR organization.

In addition to the letter writing campaign, the John Carter fans are spreading the word that June 5, 2012 is J-Day — the day that the “John Carter” DvD and Blu-Ray go on sale.

By helping to promote the DvD and Blu-Ray sales of “John Carter” fans are hoping that Disney will see sufficient support for the franchise that they will consider greenlighting a sequel. It’s not unheard of that a movie franchise takes off after a spectacular flop. For example, the Saul Zaentz Company generated millions of dollars in licensing revenues over 20 years after the Ralph Bakshi “Lord of the Rings: Part One” movie bombed at the box office (a planned sequel was never made).

To this end the John Carter fans are also looking for merchandisers to pick up John Carter licenses from Disney. The first company they are targeting is LEGO.

You can join the campaign even without joining the Facebook group by visiting BackToBarsoom.com and filling out the volunteer skills questionnaire. If you have a Twitter account, a blog, or just like to comment on Websites that carry news stories you can contribute to the effort.
