Dear Hollywood, Please Spare Us Your 3-D Movie Wasteland of Dreams

So it seems that the Hollywood film industry has fallen in love with the latest 3-dimensional film technology. That’s a shame because watching these movies in 3-D is really excruciatingly uncomfortable. Maybe audiences are flocking to the theaters to watch this schlocky crap now but I’ve already begun looking for the 2-D versions of the films in the cinemas around my new home.

And when I walk into Sam’s Club and Costco and see the 3-D TV sets with their goofy binocular demonstrations, I pass on by. The next TV set I purchase (soon) will be a light-weight flatscreen that has NO 3-D capability.

It was an interesting innovation when “Avatar” came out but today’s 3-D technology is truly horrible. Those stupid, goofy glasses are not fun to wear and they don’t always work. Sometimes you have to take them off just to give your eyes a rest from the strain.

The film industry is turning into the next tobacco industry: manufacturing a demand and a need for a technology that is going to do far more harm than good and which isn’t worthwhile to begin with.

As someone who grew up loving all the Star Trek television shows I would LOVE to enter into the age of full-blown holographic entertainment, but the Avataresque 3-D technology is NOT the way to do that.

We can afford to wait another 5, 10, 15, or 20 years if that is what it will take.

If you want to blow us away with a 3-dimensional entertainment experience, then maybe you should take a look at the way Hatsune Miku is produced. THAT is a much more interesting 3-D format.
